Event Recap – Juneteenth Festival

Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom and America’s Founding Promise

Juneteenth gives Republicans an opportunity to tell an important part of America’s story: our party’s central role in the Emancipation Proclamation, the Civil Rights movement, and landmark civil rights legislation. Some conservatives view Juneteenth as a left-wing effort to compete with Independence Day or divide Americans by race. We in the FCRC believe we should take a different—and better—view. We should embrace Juneteenth as a holiday that complements Independence Day, not one that competes with it.

Juneteenth symbolizes the triumph of liberty over arbitrary rule and marks a vital step toward fulfilling the promise of the American Revolution – especially in the year when we celebrate the 250th Birthday of our founding. It reflects our nation’s commitment to enforcing emancipation and ensuring that all people in the United States enjoy the same rights and responsibilities protected by the Constitution. It was one of many necessary steps toward achieving equal rights under the law.

Commemorating Juneteenth also rejects distorted accounts of America’s founding and affirms our founding creed, renewed by Lincoln and the Union victory. In that spirit, we participated last Saturday in Warrenton’s annual Juneteenth Celebration. Our booth highlighted the role Republicans have played in advancing civil rights and celebrated the achievements of Black Americans in claiming their rightful place in our nation’s story.

Although we were not overwhelmed by visitors, we had several lively and respectful conversations with attendees. Our primary goal was to educate, not to proselytize. We handed out hundreds of one-page histories of Juneteenth and shared information about the holiday and the events that followed—facts many attendees did not know. By that measure, the day was a success: respectful exchanges, meaningful conversations, and a valuable opportunity to tell our side of the story.
